DTN Chameleon For Windows (Data Transmission Network). Real-time and delayed satellite datafeeds for financial services, energy, agriculture, weather. by John Sweeney

For years, getting the data to feed software was expensive. In fact, many novice traders entered into active trading burdened by excessive overhead. One early solution was DTN (Data Transmission Network) FM for agricultural traders and then DTN Wall Street (via satellite), which at $34.95 a month for delayed data was great back in the 1980s. That you can still get started with real-time transmission of data for about $350 is a testament to the growth in telecommunications and computer productivity as well as DTN’s growth and management.

DTN started transmitting agricultural information to farmers, and it still has deep roots in this niche. It added financials, because it already had expertise in futures from its agricultural background. When energy futures came along, they and their relateds were added as well. Nowadays, DTN has all North American equities and futures, US options, mutual funds and corporate and Treasury bonds.

However, the key feature that turned thousands of users into DTN fans was the remarkably reasonable (well, cheap) entry. You could sign up with DTN and get the dish, the receiver and even a simple black-and-white monitor for zero dollars upfront. Plus, the DTN tech staff was genuinely helpful about setting the whole thing up. Nowadays, it’s $298 to get started, which includes a color monitor, satellite dish and receiver, data storage and all the cabling you need. A computer of your own is not required for many of DTN’s services.
